Portraits After 5 at the National Portrait Gallery

FOR TEENS, AGES 13-17

Identity and fashion collide with teens exploring what makes up their “look.” Come early to view the iconic images of Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson by style-maker Andy Warhol in the Twentieth-Century and Contemporary Americans exhibitions on the museum’s third floor. Watch teens strut their stuff on the catwalk in front of celebrity judges during the finale of the D.C. Public Library’s Rip This Runway program. Grab a mask and decorate it to conceal your identity; reveal who you really are later in the evening. Or create a whole new look and step into one of the pop-up photo booths to have it captured and projected on the walls of the Kogod Courtyard. Enjoy delicious food and non-alcoholic drinks, and dance as the DJs spin beats. Make your identity stand out, and be a part of the scene.

6:00 p.m.
• Courtyard Café sells food and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the evening
• View iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Michael Jackson by Andy Warhol in the third-floor Twentieth-Century and Contemporary Americans exhibition galleries

6:30 p.m.
• Come by 6:30pm to win tickets for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics vs. the New York Liberty that same night at the Verizon Center (a signed Washington Mystics team basketball will also be given away)
• Teen fashion show on the runway in the Kogod Courtyard
• Decorate and personalize a mask to hide—and later reveal—your identity
• Step into a photo booth to have your portrait taken and projected on the walls of the courtyard
• Dance to the DJ’s beats in the Kogod Courtyard

Featured Exhibition: Twentieth-Century and Contemporary Americans
Four galleries on the third floor of the museum showcase the major cultural and political hallmarks of the last century and of present-day America.

Paintings, sculpture, photographs, and prints portray those from a range of backgrounds who were at the center of these moments, among them Marilyn Monroe, Shaquille O’Neal, Selena, Robert F. Kennedy, and Michael Jackson.
